The impressive variety of colors in the Feengrotten is due to dissolved minerals in a wide range of compositions. The water dripping from the ceiling contains numerous chemical elements and molecules that can combine to form solid minerals. <\/p>

At this molecule table, you can assemble your own mineral, much like a puzzle. Remove a piece from the water cloud; the corresponding elements and molecules will follow automatically. Once all the pieces are correctly assembled, additional information and illustrations of the resulting mineral will appear. <\/p>

“A miner without light is a poor wretch.” <\/p>

So goes an old German proverb. It gets straight to the point: mining without lighting would be simply impossible. Since the beginnings of mining, technical developments over many centuries have continuously improved the way light was generated and used underground. <\/p>

The first artificial light source in the Stone and Bronze Ages was the pine torch\u2014a resin-rich piece of wood that burns brightly. In antiquity, oil lamps were made of clay and usually filled with animal fat, primarily beef tallow. <\/p>

In the Middle Ages, lamps like those used in the Jeremias Gl\u00fcck mine were developed. These open or closed miners’ lamps were made of clay, brass, or iron. Tallow or oil extracted from the seeds of turnip rape\u2014a plant related to rapeseed\u2014served as fuel. <\/p>

The miners’ lamps were equipped with a sturdy hook. This allowed the miners to attach their lamps to the mine supports or to their clothing. This way, both hands remained free to work safely in the tunnels and shafts. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/details>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
